The Research Unit Mathematics and Applications (MA) is a research team hosted at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Aveiro. It was created in 1994, and since then its main goal is to carry out fundamental and applied research in several domains of Mathematics. Nowadays, the MA team has more than 45 members with PhD and more than 20 members with MSc.

The MA also aims to contribute for the scientific development of young researchers as well as for the preparation of new researchers through post-graduate and advanced education. E.g., in 2008 the MA team concluded the supervision of:
11 MSc students;
7 PhD students.

The MA Research Unit scientific activities are organized in six research groups:
- Algebra and Geometry Group
- Complex and Hypercomplex Analysis Group
- Functional Analysis and Applications Group
- History of Mathematics Group
- Mathematical Systems Theory Group
- Probability and Statistics Group

In order to achieve its goals, the MA promotes activities such as: regular talks, courses and seminars; dissemination of the scientific production of its team through the participation in scientific meetings; international cooperation (by means of visits to foreign countries and invitation of foreign researchers); organization of workshops and congresses; post-graduate and advanced research. In order to increase its contribution to social and economic development, the MA also strives for an active participation in multidisciplinary projects in cooperation with other research teams.

In the year 2006, the MA team:
-Published more than 100 papers;
-Presented more than 100 communications in conferences;
-Received the visit of more than 50 researchers from outside Portugal;
-Organized (in total or in part) 8 International Conferences, 1 Workshop, and 1 European Intensive Course.

In the year 2007 the MA team published 95 papers in total.

In the last year (2008), the MA team:
-Published 4 Books;
-Published 7 Book Chapters;
-Published 68 Papers in International Journals;
-Published 27 Papers in Conference Proceedings;
-Presented 100 Communications in Conferences;
-Received the visit of 32 Researchers.
